Behavioral Parent Training recognizes that by comparison, the many hours a parent spends with their child each week offers more leverage for behavior change and emotion regulation than the single hour a child might spend with a therapist. Parents are integral to the success of their child's unique developmental process. Thus, the BPT approach positions parents to skillfully respond to their child and model effective behavior.
My approach to BPT focuses on teaching parents behavioral principles that are foundational to more specific skills. Parents learn to apply these principles to their own child's behavior, so that they can knowledgeably select the appropriate skill for that behavioral moment. Some topics we will discuss include why we focus on behavior, how the environment interacts with individual temperament, and what we can do about it. My goal is for you to not need me anymore, not for you to rely on me to address every detailed behavior!
Although BPT was first and foremost developed as an effective treatment for Conduct Disorder, research has shown that this approach is also effective for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, and many other conditions with a behavioral component. See the articles below for more reading on this evidence base.
